"Why?" The really hard question was:
"When?"
On February 6, 1915 special trams were run to Dee Why
on the newly extended tramline
from Brookvale to Narrabeen. 1/- (one shilling) got you admission to the carnival put on by Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club where you spent the afternoon in awe as the legendary Duke Kahanamoku gave an outstanding exhibition of surfboard riding.
Often riding waves 12 feet high and for nearly 150 yards,it was the first paid public
exhibition of
surfboard riding seen in Australia.
Not bad value for a bob.
So if 22 chapters on 50 years of surfing history at one of the world's best surf spots isn't enough for you, we're sorry.
With Dee Why, you've got a lot of history to choose from.
"Why Dee Why" is just one story told by those who lived it and surfed it for over half a
century at Dee Why Point, where the locals have always quietly
dominated in and out of the water. Many of them members and Presidents of Australia's Oldest Surfboard Riders Club.
Other
than sex, drugs, stabbings, death, rock and roll, fashion, fun and
taking off inside the Suck-Up at Dee Why Point, it really tells only a
little about our favourite piece of D.Y. Even so, we think that 50 years of classic surfing history in a couple of hours is pretty good value too. Claim your piece of surfing history with "Why Dee Why" the dvd. "When?". Now!
